Trick or Treat Alternatives

If the weather is bad, consider setting up in-house trick or treating options such as these...

Set up treats in every room of your house and have the kids go from room to room to Trick or Treat.

You can even let the kids take turns handing out the candy in each room to you, mom and dad!

BLOG 2020 HALLOWEEN HUNT.jpg

Hide candy around the house just like an Easter Egg hunt! Have the kids grab their Trick or Treat bags and find as much candy as they can!

Try playing I-spy with hidden candy in the room!

BLOG 2020 HALLOWEEN SCAVENGER HUNT.jpg

Older kids may enjoy finding their candy by way of fun Halloween hints and clues. Create a scavenger hunt to find a cauldron of treats at the end! Make it as long or as short as you wish!

Murder Mystery Night

Solving a mystery is so much fun! Dim the lights or use candles to add to the mood, depending on how scary your crew likes it to be.

Here are fun mystery games for all ages…

  • Clue Junior, a version of Clue for younger kids where someone has broken a toy, and players try to figure out who did it.

  • Clue, the classic mystery game for kids 8 and up!

  • For older kids or a larger crew, consider Murder Mystery Flexi Party, Murder At The Pizzeria 6-14 Player Dinner Party Game. It’s a “who done it” evening of fun as everyone dresses up in character, and plays along to figure out who the murderer is. I hear it can be done over Zoom if needed as well!

Pumpkin Carving Fun

What are your pumpkin carving traditions?

Do you let the kids draw the faces?

Do you use stencils?

How can you up your carving game this year?

Challenge the family to stick to a theme for your pumpkins?

  • Sports pumpkins?

  • Movie-themed pumpkins?

  • Disney characters?

Be sure to roast the seeds, add some salt, and eat them while enjoying It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown! (My favorite Halloween movie!)

BLOG HALLOWEEN 2020 DRESS UP.jpg

Costume Fun

Have you saved Halloween costumes from previous years?

Get them out and create a Halloween dress-up bin for the kids to play with. Add some old clothes you have in your closets such as scarves, high heels, and dad’s old bow ties!

Add a few items from a thrift shop! Imaginative play is great for kids, and it will give them an opportunity to spread out the fun of Halloween!

Use the bin of costumes to play costume charades. Players have to use costumes, scarves, etc to create a costume while other players guess who they are dressed up as…

  • A fireman?

  • The tooth fairy?

  • A movie character?

Benson Family Halloween Fort Night Tradition

I have saved the best for last!

Who is the Benson family and what is Halloween Fort Night?

Katie Benson is a friend of my oldest daughter.

Katie and her husband have four kids, and she shares this fun tradition for celebrating Halloween as a family here…

  1. The whole family heads to the Dollar Store. Each child gets to choose one Halloween themed item which could be a toy, decoration, cup, or anything. The parents pick up Halloween themed plates, napkins, and cups for the night.

  2. The family heads to the grocery store to pick up fun foods for a “snacky dinner”. Veggie trays, cheese trays, popcorn, cookies, anything snacky. I really dig the “snacky dinner”! No cooking and easy cleanup so the parents can enjoy the fun too!

  3. The family then heads home to decorate! They get out Halloween decorations from past years and they begin to set up a Haunted House Fort near the TV! Now, who doesn’t love building and hanging in a fort, let alone one that is Halloween themed? Last year Katie’s son handmade “Skeleton Town” and “Zombie Row” signs to add to the atmosphere!

  4. Lastly, the family watches a few Halloween or fall-themed movies together in the fort while eating their “snacky dinner”.

I love this idea because the kids get to be involved in the decorating and preparations! There is no stress on the parents to create a perfect event. It just happens!

Families could do this on any October night or save it for Halloween night!

Thank you to Katie and the Benson Family for sharing your fun tradition so that other families can try it out!

I hope you and your families have a Happy Halloween!
